Monterey! When in Rome go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Monterey is lovely, but the highlight of visiting there is most certainly the acclaimed aquarium. Aside from driving through Big Sur, this was one of the most anticipated events of our trip. We arrived to Monterey in the early evening and had dinner at Gianna's Pizza (voted the best pizza on the Monterey peninsula and it better have been given we had to wait an hour for it to be served). We returned to our hotel, watched a bit of the Olympics and then tried to get a good night's sleep so that we could be rested and ready for our big day Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The aquarium did not disappoint. We spent the entire day there until closing. Although we enjoyed all of the exhibits, one of our favorite exhibits was the adorable sea otters, local to Monterey. They were mesmerizing to watch as they swam around on their backs playing with toys, munching on ice and doing tricks for their adoring audience. They were such a hit that Miles begged for a stuffed sea otter on the way out. I couldn't help but oblige him given his penchant for stuffed animals of every sort. Since the other kids didn't get anything from the gift shop, they were sure to remind him that it had to count as an early Christmas or birthday present, both of which are months and months away. We'll see if they actually remember that once those dates roll around.
